Short break...

... from my busy schedule and all the drinking and partying I have been doing. Just wanted to stop by and wish you all a...

Merry Christmas!!!
This proves to be a great Christmas because my mum, Arnie, and I have discussed and decided after a lengthy phone conversation with my relatives back home that we will be celebrating Christmas and New Year in the Philippines! Yay! I can't wait!
Have a safe and happy holiday everybody! Catch y'all soon!

Running for charity

Last December 4, my workmate/friend Rebecca and I participated in the annual Sussan Women's Fun Run at St. Kilda. We both signed up for the 5 km walk/run, which we both finished within the reasonable 30-40 minutes. There was also the 10 km walk/run but Bex and I thought we'd be nuts if we went for that - considering we both ran/walked 55 floors on foot up the Rialto building a few months back, our sanity is already a bit questionable isn't it?

The fun run is in support of the charity called the Make A Wish Foundation. It is a charity geared towards the needs of children with illnesses.

Check out the pictures below:

These blokes obviously thought they'll pass as women to join the fun run - NOT!

Check out this short video of me about to cross the finish line. I'm the one wearing a white cap and pink shirt. (Let me just say that this tool is sooooo cool!)

I guess along with the Rialto run, this will be something that I'd endeavour to do every year. I'll just have to maintain my workouts and the like.

Christmas let downs...

I have been feeling angsty lately. I should consider myself luckier than most Filipinos especially during this time of the year. I've done my Christmas shopping, will be hosting an elaborate party on the 27th (it's Boxing Day holiday here), and will be spending heaps of time with Arnie, family and friends.

The reasons for my "downer" feeling lately are:

1. I miss my family and friends back in the Philippines.
2. The racially fueled riots in Sydney between the White Australians and Lebanese. It's the year 2005, for crying out loud!
3. I'm missing my DLSU block reunion this year.
4. I won't be having a holiday till February.
5. I have a feeling that I won't be going back to Manila for a visit before I get married.

I know, such simple things, but I can't help feeling sad about it. I guess this is part of living in a foreign country. It ain't all steak and onions...

HP madness is still going...

I am beyond happy today… take a look at these beauties!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I got the first three Harry Potter Audio Books! Bwahahahahaha!

All these were read by Stephen Fry.

I am starting on the first three chapters of the Philosopher’s Stone. Bloody fantastic!

Each audio book is about 8 – 10 hours of Harry Potter goodness! I’m in heaven!

Christmas countdown...

It's exactly 16 days till Christmas. Wow. This is my 6th Christmas here in Australia and I spent the past five without my mum. My mum works nightshift at the Casino and she's been unlucky since her shift always included Christmas and New Year's day. I have spent those Christmases and New Years with Arnie and his family. I'm not really complaining. As much as I love Arnie and his family, I do miss spending the holidays with my mum. After all, we haven't spent Christmas together for about 3 years prior to my migration because she was already here.

Oh well, no need to get mushy about it now. I'm sure we will be celebrating Christmas and New Year's day together next year since it falls on her off days.

Christmas is such a different feeling for someone like me who has grown to love this particular holiday. Growing up in a city like Manila where Christmas is an excuse for everyone from different backgrounds and lifestyles to celebrate it with absolute vigor, I can't help but feel nostalgic about the whole way how Filipinos celebrate it. I miss being with my family back home and my crazy cousins. Even if we're already adults, we still act like children whenever we are together - frolicking around like mad, laughing about everything and anything, and playing silly stupid games. When I'm with my friends, we celebrate in a more "adult" way - drinking wine, having excellent conversations about books, music, and the like, and generally just catching up.

Hay... nakakamiss...

I might try and celebrate Christmas and New Year in Manila next year. I wish to visit my hometown one last time as a single woman. I'll just see how the wind blows around that time...

Hmmm...

There are actually people out there who think I'll be better off with Migs, my brother, my best mate, rather than with Arnie, the love of my life, my soul mate.

Hmmmm...

Funny how people think they know what's best for you, huh?

People, I love Arnie. His family loves me. I love his parents. I love Migs too, but the thought of actually getting it on with him just makes my gut wretch. Incest! Ewww!

Thanks for the concern (rolls eyes) but I know what I'm doing. I am perfectly happy with Arnie as my fiance and Migs as my best mate. Besides, he is very much in love with his girlfriend.

Psychics indeed (rolls eyes).

Edit: I have looked at my shoutbox account and found that a few people who do not have the courage to leave an email address or website link have the same IP address. That means it's the same person responding to their own comments. How pathetic!

Please stop flooding my site. I will keep on deleting your comments. I do not appreciate being called a "playgirl" and such on my own site. I do not appreciate you passing judgement on people like my fiance's mother when you can't even string a decent, grammatically correct sentence together. This is my site and I have every right to kick people out of here.

If you don't like what I write or who I am or you think I'm a total slut, then leave me alone and go bother someone else...

My HP day...

Finally saw Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire this morning at 9:30 first showing, thinking the cinema won't be filled with mad kids. To my dismay, the cinema was packed not with young kids who tend to be quiet throughout the movie because of awe but by teenagers all gushing at how cute Harry/Ron/Viktor/Cedric are!

Sheesh!

Well, aside from that annoying little tidbit I have only two words to describe the film: Ruddy brilliant!

Like, wow! I agree that there are so many deviations from the book but the story telling was amazing. I especially enjoyed Mad Eye Moody's characterisation. I thought he was an absolute riot! Ralph Fiennes played an excellent Voldemort. He always played very good evil roles.

Daniel is growing up to be oh-la-la. Gosh, I've always had a weakness for the dark hair and blue eyes. Sheesh! Too bad he's jail bait! Hahahahahaha!

As I always said to my friends, I'm waiting for him to turn 20 and then he'll be free game! Bwahahahahahaha!

Anyway, it was very entertaining. The humour, the slight innuendo, and the obvious raging of hormones was a very good change from the "children's book movie version" concept that the past three films have had. Fair enough, the characters are growing up and they should be portrayed as such - Hermione talking about Viktor being more "physical" than the talking-to-a-girl kind of guy (the look Harry was giving her when she was saying this was so funny), Harry blubbering in front of Cho, and Ron showing mad jealousy towards Viktor and Hermione. I also thought Hagrid trying to grope Madame Maxine's bottom was a good touch :)

I can't wait for the DVD now. I also can't wait for the 5th movie. I especially hope the kids continue on with the 6th movie. To see Harry and Ginny get together would be a sight to behold! I am an avid Harry/Ginny shipper, so sorry to other ship supporters there :p

Ruddy brilliant!

Kill or be killed

The whole issue of death penalty has been a topic of discussion these past few weeks here in Australia. This morning, a convicted drug trafficker from Melbourne by the name of Nguyen Tuong Van was sent to the gallows in Singapore's Changi Prison for possession of 400 grams of heroin. Nguyen had been imprisoned for three years in the said prison before a ruling was finally made around a month ago.

People were divided almost equally with regards to death penalty being a harsh punishment for drug traffickers. Bear in mind that Australia does not have capital punishment whilst most Asian countries do. I believe that other than Singapore, Malaysia also uses the medieval method of hanging.

I personally believe that drug traffickers rank up there with murderers and rapists. They may not kill people immediately, but they do contribute in a person's destruction of oneself - their family, their friends, and their lives. People who sell drugs do not have a social conscience. They do not care about whom they sell these drugs to just as long as they get the right amount of money for it. In Nguyen's case, he decided to traffic drugs to help out his twin brother in paying off debts that were also drug related. His twin brother was a heroin addict.

Tsk. Did he honestly think that getting into the drug trade will solve his brother's problems that involved drugs in the first place?

Nguyen was 25 years old. His life was cut short unfortunately because of a very stupid mistakes, albeit with the best intentions at heart. This may sound callous but he got what he deserved. He was intending to supply drugs, he knew what the consequences were, and he still went for it.

The only person I feel sorry for is her mother, who honestly still thinks this was her fault.

Poor lady.

So, is capital punishment a good thing or a bad thing? My only answer is this: there is a reason why Singapore is what it is today. Crime lords would always think twice before they do anything there. They know for a fact that if they were caught, they will never get away lightly.

I personally think Australia should do something to be harder on drug convictions and the like. The last thing I want is for this country to be laden with junkies all over the place... tsk, tsk.

Back from technological rapture..

I can't believe this turned out to be a shorter break than I originally thought. I got my laptop last Friday night and have not been away from it since. I uploaded all my games, programs, favourite music videos, and songs. So far, I have around 10 gigabites songs and music videos.

This weekend, I'll be buying Battle for Middle Earth, the Lord of the Rings game. I'm sure around that time, I'll be unavailable again. I spent these past few days playing Sims 2 every night and catching up on my writing. Having a laptop is so convenient that whenever inspiration hits me, all I have to do is turn it on and type away.

The soft keypads - I find it so soothing.

I brought my laptop to Starbucks this afternoon while I was working on a work report during lunch. Thank God for wireless technology. I was able to download a few more songs while I was typing my report. Bloody fantastic!

As soon as I download Adobe Photoshop, I'll try and make my own blog template. Hopefully, it'll turn out okay. This laptop is making me want to write more. I might even start up my own website containing original short stories and fanfiction of various anime, books, and tv shows. I'll see how I go.

So many plans, so little time. Sigh...

Short break...

Seeing that I don't update regularly I thought this would be a useless post, but I thought I'd let you guys know I might take a few days off from posting. I know that I promised to post the Jamiroquai photos soon after the concert but it just so happens that I've sold my 3 year old Packard Bell desktop and will be picking up my new Toshiba Satellite M70/S00 laptop. I am very excited about this. This happens to be my first laptop and just thinking about the convenience of a carry anywhere word processor for school, work, and my writing, the upgraded video card for PC gaming, the DVD burner, and the Intel Centrino mobile technology capability is enough to send me off into orbit.

Now that I think about it, I may be even be off for a few weeks. Battle for Middle Earth, here I come!!!

See you, hopefully, in a few days!

Mad for Harry and then some...

The world is going through Potter mania at the moment, excluding New Zealand and Australia wherein the movie is yet to be shown. In Australia, we would have to suffer and wait for another week before Goblet of Fire hits our shores. Argh! The wait! I hate it!

I have friends in the Philippines and the States telling me about how good/plain/bad it was for them. I was pratically yelling at them to stop and that I don't want to hear anything about it. I don't want their opinions to cloud my own judgement of how the movie version of book 4 turned out to be. Personally, I am very excited over the whole Harry/Cho interaction, the dragons, the Priori Incantatem, and the Quidditch cup.

On a related note, Mr. Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, is actually in Adelaide, Australia at the moment filming his latest film based on an Australian book called December Boys, which is a story about the friendship between four orphaned boys and how the possibility of being adopted by one family threatens to tear that friendship apart.

A lot of interesting things ahead for Mr. Radcliffe. Personally, as long as he continues with the rest of the HP series, I'm happy.

*****

I'm all set for the Jamiroquai concert tomorrow night! My bessy Migs bought a couple of tickets last week so that we can catch tomorrow's show. What a friend!

I will be posting pictures of the concert - hopefully, cameras are allowed :)

Things I have learned about the opposite sex...

In my 27 years, I feel like I am almost a veteran in understanding the workings of the male mind. For one thing, I have started "studying" them since I first found out that boys and girls are different - so this was from the age of 10. So, I have had 17 years of studying boys - that is way longer than any doctorate degree out there.

In these 17 years, I have had boyfriends, male acquaintances, good friends, and have also met men that I absolutely loathed. I have discovered different things from them during the different stages of my life, each discovery more amusing than the next. Listed below are these "discoveries" I have made during the years. To my male friends and readers: please feel free to comment if you agree or disagree. Please bear in mind that these are based on my personal experiences.

Discoveries I made in my childhood years (grade school):

1. Boys get smelly after playing - probably because during this time, their parents have not introduced them to deodorant or similar.
2. Boys tease girls constantly especially if they like her - very immature, but it is their way of coping with very foreign feelings.
3. They either tease or get absolutely shy - this was the case with my first boyfriend :)
4. The word "gentleman" doesn't exist - a particular incident reminds me of this when I refused to let my classmate copy my exam paper and in retaliation, he stuffed rocks in my bag :p
5. Boys just tease girls PERIOD - it doesn't matter if they like you or not, they're just mean that way.
6. Boys are cute when they try to be - enough said.
7. Boys are gross - you figure this out :)
8. They find farting a funny pasttime.

Discoveries I made in my adolescent years (high school):

1. Boys are arrogant pricks - unfortunately, a lot of guys in my high school were arrogant pricks.
2. Boys have started thinking about sex. All common sense has gone out of the window - it's pathetic when they start trying to bed every single female in sight :p
3. Boys think that girls are impressed by cars and the like - unfortunately, some girls are :(
4. Boys STILL tease girls they like :)
5. Come to think about it, boys just like teasing girls PERIOD.
6. Most boys at this stage find it impossible to have friendships with girls - I'm one of the lucky ones to have met guy friends whom I am still close to this day:)
7. Boys are less smelly at this stage because they are so conscious of their looks, unless they really have a very bad case of BO... ick!
8. They find farting a funny pasttime.

Discoveries I made in my adult years (university to present):

1. Boys will always have sex in the brain :p
2. Boys will do anything to get sex.
3. Boys STILL tease girls they like.
4. At this stage, I have to say that boys are just damn immature because they just like teasing girls all the friggin' time PERIOD.
5. Boys are all the same regardless of age. They're priorities are still the same - eating, sleeping, drinking, farting, sex. I personally think most of them haven't past the Oral stage of development according to Freud :)
6. Boys can never think with both heads, one often leading the other :p
7. Boys mean what they say. There's no such thing as tact or lying with boys. They are so easy to read! If you're female and you can't catch them at it, you're not looking hard enough. I can smell a liar a mile away - note: I have had tons of experience on this so it might not be the case for you :)
8. They find farting a funny pasttime.

All of these things listed here, no matter how sexist or mean it may seem, are the same reasons why I have a lot of male friends. I understand and accept them for the mess and interesting creatures that they are. I don't judge them or sermon them, I just accept them. Boys are not hard to understand. They are very simple (I don't mean stupid) creatures. They are simple in a sense that they are usually very upfront about how they feel about a person. There isn't any of the niceties involved. Unfortunately, there are a lot of girls who don't like certain guys because of this particular trait. Girls insist on the niceties, the icing on top of the cake, the bullshit. This is how men become the pigs that some of them are known as.

Here's a little secret for girls looking for the perfect man: THERE IS NO SUCH THING! Everything is learnt behaviour. You want to ensure that your man won't cheat on you? Encourage him to go out with his mates a lot, even to the strip clubs. This shows that you trust them and at the same time they know that if they do cheat, you wouldn't have any qualms of chucking them out. You want to ensure that your man will continue to respect you and won't treat you like a kitchen rug? Constantly challenge him. Don't be afraid to question his decisions and feel free to express your opinions on issues if you do not agree with him. Have an intellectual argument with him. This will show that just because you're an item, it wouldn't mean that you will stop thinking for yourself. Independence is the key. They find it intriguing and sexy. Show a guy that you are helpless without them and they'll be running away faster than you can say "proposal". It's not fun for both parties if you're too clingy. Keep each other on one's toes. Keep the other guessing. Being predictable is the bane of every relationship. How many times have I heard of couples breaking up because the relationship got too boring, predictable, or comfortable?

Arnie says that there is never a dull moment when he's with me. I keep him on his toes. I make him guess all the time. I entertain him with jokes, anecdotes, and different things that interest me. My relationship with him has lasted for 5 years and we're getting married soon. Do you think I have earned my right to preach? Hahahahahaha!

Having said all of the above, I would be the first person to also admit that not all men are nice. There are some real "beauties" out there that I have had the misfortune of meeting, but that's for another post...

Video of the week 10...

In this week's video, we're revisiting one of my favourite artists of all time - Depeche Mode.

Depeche Mode started in 1980 as a synth rock band hailing from Basildon, England. They have been one of those bands that have been around for so long and have been successful all throughout the New Wave/New Romantic era of music - my personal favourite genre of all.

They have just released an album called "Playing the Angel" and have received rave reviews as well. Current members are Martin Gore, Dave Gahan, and Andrew Fletcher. Former members include Alan Wilder and Vince Clarke, whom, by the way, formed Erasure and Yazoo.

This video is called "Personal Jesus". It may be familiar to Marilyn Manson fans out there. He did a rather impressive remake of this song. I guess this song is very fitting to the world's current climate, if you know what I mean.

Enjoy!

Personal Jesus

Your own personal jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who’s there

Feeling unknown
And you’re all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I’ll make you a believer

Take second best
Put me to the test
Things on your chest
You need to confess
I will deliver
You know I’m a forgiver

Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith

Your own personal jesus...

Feeling unknown
And you’re all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I’ll make you a believer

I will deliver
You know I’m a forgiver

Reach out and touch faith

Your own personal jesus

Reach out and touch faith

What Famous Leader Are You?

I chose to answer 45 questions to get a more accurate result and came up with this...

Hmmm... it just seems fitting that I get the Great Emancipator. After all, we share the same birthday ^_^

Catching up these past few weeks...

Hi guys. Forgive my absence this past week. It's inexcusable. I have been busy - not because of wedding arrangements (I won't be doing that until next year). This past week has been a combination of work overload, catching up with movies, and a game of pool or two.

I went through training at work for our system and processes upgrade. This, in, short, would mean more work and Big Brother will be watching us closely. Oh well, I was getting a bit bored anyway. At least this way, our productivity measurements are going to get tightened and will force everybody to shape up. This also means that I may have to lead another training program for my colleagues... sigh, I remember doing this when our system was brand new around 4 years ago. That was fun... NOT!

Very challenging though. Imagine teaching people who have no IT knowledge whatsoever and making them believe that the new system is the best thing to come out since sliced bread? Hard work, I tell you...

Now, it'll be DOUBLY fun to teach people that we have no way of doing anymore shortcuts in the processes or else it will result in a service failure, which will result in the workers not getting their incentives. I could just picture the tomatoes being thrown my way.

Isn't that always the case? The messenger always get killed, while the author goes scott free.

I'll just have to make sure that I wear my protective armour...

***

Since it's my school holidays for the next 3 months (hooray!), I was able to catch up on some valuable movie time - alone and with my mates. I watched "Elizabethtown" alone a couple of weeks ago while the boys (read: Arnie, his brother Rey, and Caloi) watched "Doom". I wasn't in the mood for mindless violence so I opted to watch the former.

"Elizabethtown" is a cute romantic comedy with Orlando Bloom ("Lord of the Rings", "Pirates of the Carribean", "Troy") and Kirsten Dunst ("Spiderman", "Interview with the Vampire", "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"). I enjoyed it. Like I said, it was cute. I'd rather hear Orlando Bloom with his usual English accent though. He sounded a bit funny as an American.

Last week, my post grad friends Pat, Em, and I watched "Pride and Prejudice" with Kiera Knightly playing the lead role of Elizabeth Bennet. I am a big fan of the BBC tele-series of the same novel, but with Colin Firth playing the dastardly Mr. Darcy. It was a good film, although I still preferred the movie adaptation of "Sense and Sensibility" with Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant - not to mention that Severus Snape, er, Alan Rickman was an excellent and dashing Captain Christopher. After the movie, we had a few drinks and had a nice chat. We are all planning to have a barbeque party at my place soon for our "Doctor Who" marathon! Em is giving me the 9th Doctor's first box set as her engagement present - a bit late but very thoughtful of her nonetheless.

***

What else happened? Ah, discovered this quaint little bowling and billiards place right in the heart of the city. Fantastic place to chill, play video games, have a few drinks, play a little pool, and probably play a bit of bowling. It's a bit steep though - $15 a game of bowling! Sheesh!

***

I have become a chocolate addict. Going to Max Brenner or Koko Black has become my habit - a very bad habit. I actually feel some sort of withdrawal symptoms if I haven't consumed anything chocolatey for a day or so. Help!

***

To top that off, I have been craving korean barbeque this past week, which is sad since I had it twice the week before.

***

Will post soon so that I refrain from updating with meaningless dribble...

Hot Melbourne Cup turned freaky halloween...

The day started out well. Yesterday, November 1, is the first Tuesday of the November which means it's Melbourne Cup holiday! The Victorian State had a day off yesterday and get to enjoy the day of "the race that stops a nation." The Melbourne Cup has been a tradition for 145 years and it was only the year after the Queen visited the event that it turned into a holiday. Hey, in this case... Long live the Queen!

Anyway, we had a barbeque at my place. Friends and relatives came over to enjoy the freakishly warm weather. For the past three Melbourne Cups, this is the hottest it has been. It went up to a hellish 31 degrees!

It got hot and uncomfortable. A lot of alcohol and sodas were consumed... as well as food.

My mother, her husband, and her cousin all left. The house was left to myself, Arnie, his brother Rey, and friend Caloi. We decided to park ourselves on the sofa inside the house where it's so much cooler and comfortable.

We had the Filipino Channel (TFC) installed in the family room. We all decided to watch movies. Surprise, surprise, all the movies they were showing yesterday were of the horror/suspense genre. I thought I was just going to laugh aloud with my friends since I felt it wasn't going to be believable and made up of actors with bad acting. We watched three films back to back - Pa-siyam (Ninth), Sanib (Possession), and Patayin Sa Sindak si Barbara (Kill Barbara with Fear). I enjoyed watching all three films.

As Arnie and the others left and I was all alone (with Meeko) in the house, I felt a bit iffy. The movies may have gotten to me after all. The movie "Pa-siyam" got to me most of all. The movie title "Pa-siyam" refers to an old Filipino custom of praying the novena for nine days after a person's death. It is also believed that on the ninth day of a person's death, one has the ability to communicate with that person's spirit. In the movie, a mother died a horrible death and her children believed she was murdered because she was found hanging by a ceiling fan. The whole movie showed the siblings trapped in the mother's home, haunted by their own mother, unable to leave until they solve the mystery of her death.

This movie got to me because of the way the mother was mistreated by the hired helps. She was forced fed, made to bathe in boiling water, chained to her bed lying in her own filth until she was driven to madness. On the "pa-siyam," the children were able to communicate with their dead mother's spirit. With so much hatred and spite, she claimed that it was her own children that killed her. It was them letting a couple of strangers mistreat her. As punishment, she told them that she'll be taking one of them with her. And she did. One sibling ended up hanging herself by the same ceiling fan. That's how it ended. No frills, no grand hollywood endings, no resolution. The movie started with a death and ended with another death.

Needless to say, and curse my overactive mind which goes to hyperdrive especially at night, I wasn't able to sleep. It took "Shopaholic Ties A Knot", which I have finished, to lull me to sleep... at 3:30 in the morning! As a result, I woke up at 8:30 and was 30 minutes late for work.

I am here at work at the moment unable to concentrate. I have never been affected by a film so much... well, aside from The Ring.

Now, I have to stop thinking about that too...

I may have to go over Arnie's place tonight.

Engagement Party pics are here!

I finally got around to posting these things. I was planning to do some kind of collage but have no idea how to so I posted these the old fashion way through Picasa.

Anyway, I'll have to warn you guys. To those who have known me for quiet sometime now would know that I am not girly. I am very much a tomboy and I think I'll be staying this way until the day I die. Unfortunately, certain things in my life like a bloody engagement and being so in love tend to change my perspective... a bit.

Get ready to see some Jennie girly pics... shudder...

This is definitely not going to be a regular occurence!

Enjoy the pictures!
